The Premier's Reading Challenge is open to all Tasmanian students in prep to grade 6, including home educated students.
Registration closes on 26 June.
Students are challenged to read ten books between 22 June and 28 August 2009.
There are no mandatory reading lists. Students must choose books that are both appropriate and challenging for them, according to their individual reading level and ability.
The Premier's Reading Challenge aims to be inclusive and rewarding for all students regardless of their reading level. Students with good reading ability should be helped to select at least some books that will help to develop their reading into new authors and genres. Students with low reading ability for their age should be helped to find books that enable them to participate in the Challenge and develop their reading confidence.
Students with disabilities can use texts that have been adapted to meet their individual learning and literacy needs including Braille texts and audio books. They may also read with teacher aides and reading buddies.
Students who are able to may read books that are available in languages other than English.
Teachers, teacher librarians, parents or guardians must sign each entry on the student's reading log. This indicates that a student has read (or shared in the reading of) a book at an appropriate level and that the book title and author information are accurate.
Schools participating in the Premier's Reading Challenge are required to nominate a school contact person (the "PRC school co-ordinator") to be the main point of contact between the school and the PRC Team. This person is responsible for registering the school and making sure that all PRC information is available to participating teachers and students.
Books that students read for the Premier's Reading Challenge can also be counted towards the MS Readathon and other literacy programs.
The deadline for PRC school co-ordinators to submit Challenge completion information (ie. student names, grade, gender) is 4 September. Students whose details are not provided by this date will miss out on entering the draw to win an iPod and may not receive their official certificate.
